Early Life and Education
Alejandro Nicholas Mayorkas was born on November 24, 1959, in Havana, Cuba. As a political refugee, he immigrated to the United States at the age of three. Mayorkas earned his undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley and his law degree from Loyola Marymount University.
Political Career
Mayorkas served as a federal prosecutor before entering politics. In 2009, President Obama nominated him to lead U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), where he oversaw comprehensive immigration reform initiatives. In 2021, President Biden appointed Mayorkas as Secretary of Homeland Security, making him the first Latino and immigrant to hold the position.
