Millie Gibson to Leave 'Doctor Who' After One Season

Gibson, who made her debut as Ruby Sunday in the show's Centenary Special, will depart the series following a series of specials

Millie Gibson, who made her debut as Ruby Sunday in the Centenary Special, will leave 'Doctor Who' after one season, Variety has confirmed. The actress, who played Kelly Neelan in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street from 2019 to 2022, will depart the series following a series of specials.

Gibson's exit was announced by the BBC on Tuesday, with the actress saying in a statement that she had "made the decision to leave Doctor Who and I will be leaving at the end of the Specials." She added: "I would like to thank the BBC for giving me the opportunity to play Ruby Sunday. It has been an incredible journey and I have loved every minute of it."

Gibson's departure from 'Doctor Who' comes after a successful first season in the role. She received critical acclaim for her performance, with many praising her chemistry with Ncuti Gatwa, who plays the Doctor. However, it is understood that Gibson made the decision to leave the series in order to pursue other projects.

Gibson's exit is a blow to 'Doctor Who', which is currently undergoing a major creative overhaul. The series is set to be taken over by new showrunner Russell T Davies next year, and it is expected that he will make significant changes to the show's format and cast.
